Letterforms are both text and image. Before we read a text, we perceive it visually. In this workshop, students will learn how to connect the shape of letters with the meaning of words to leverage the potential of lettering to communicate visually and verbally at the same time.
I will show students the parameters that define the shape of letters and how they can systematically use these parameters to design custom letterforms that express exactly what they want to convey.

Writing is a convention — a shared system that determines which symbol stands for which sound. Two vertical lines with a horizontal one halfway up make an H; two diagonals with a crossbar form an A. While the basic structure of letters stays the same, their appearance can vary endlessly.
In this workshop, we’ll explore the boundaries of legibility. Through drawing exercises and playful experiments, we’ll investigate what fundamentally defines writing. At what point do letters move so far from familiar forms that they turn into abstract graphic shapes? By examining this transition, we’ll gain a fresh perspective on the alphabet and discover new ideas for creative variation.
