What do people think in the museum? Are they amazed, fascinated, irritated? Together with the MK&G staff, I collected statements. The voices of the visitors now echo through one of the museum’s staircases as an installation.

»What people say« is often the raw material for my independent work. I collect overheard sentences, arrange them into new texts, and turn them into typographic installations.
The installation Wow! Huh? Cool!—Visitors’ Voices is a site-specific work created for one of the staircases at the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg. In this transitional space between floors, the project explores access and barriers within the museum—both spatial and mental.
To prepare, I collected voices together with the museum attendants: remarks, spontaneous questions, and casual comments about rooms and exhibits. Designed in an illustrative typeface, form and phrasing merge in the mind into a sound image—you can almost hear the sentences right away, because writing is an audiovisual medium. Painted on wood and installed across three floors, the visitors’ voices echo through the staircase.
»Kind of reminds me of the Bauhaus.«
»Are these things real?«
»Am I really not allowed to touch that?«
»Well, that’s something I’d never have in my home!«
»But great rooms though …«
The statements reflect feelings and ideas that many people can relate to. In an engaging way, they encourage visitors to reflect on their own experiences in the museum.
The project was made possible with support from VG Bild-Kunst.
