For the literature festival »Hamburg liest« I developed a lettering style that links the period immediately after the Second World War with the present day.
seven lettering quotes from Wolfgang Borchert’s play »Draußen vor der Tür« (»The Man Outside«)
research, style development and lettering
Lettering cut from vinyl, approx. 70 cm wide
2021
Ham.lit e.V. / Nefeli Kavouras
The quotes from »Draußen vor der Tür« were placed on doors in Hamburg-Eppendorf, where Wolfgang Borchert grew up in the 1920s.
I developed a connected script that contains elements of the old German Kurrent script, for example angular, broken curves on letters like »n«, »m« and »u«. I also replaced some Latin letters with their Kurrent equivalents, like the »d« and the »r«.
First I wrote the quotes very small in pencil, like a stylized handwriting. Then I redrew the writing digitally with vector curves.
Vectorizing is a time-consuming and hypnotic process: the biggest challenge is to fine-tune the letterforms without getting lost in their details.
I correct the vector drawing on paper, because imbalances are easier to recognize in print. The many notes in red serve as work assignments for the next round of revisions.
In the final vector drawing, the letters are consistent throughout but adapted to their word context.
From the small handwritten sketch to bold lettering that is 70 centimeters wide.
We opted for bright yellow vinyl for the production because it is easy to see on dark windows and looks contemporary in contrast to the historicized letterforms.
To avoid the lettering looking nostalgic, I didn’t want it to look handmade. Instead, I designed clear shapes with smooth edges.
One of the quotes on the door of the high school Wolfgang Borchert attended.
On some doors the quotes remained far beyond the festival week.
In May 2021, during the »Hamburg liest« literature festival, all of Hamburg read Wolfgang Borchert’s post-war drama »Draußen vor der Tür« (»The Man Outside«) once again and celebrated the author’s 100th birthday.
Nefeli Kavouras, one of the festival organizers, had the idea of placing quotes from the play on doors that played a role in Borchert’s life. She asked me to develop a lettering style for these quotes that would connect the play from 1947 with the present day.
