The basic shape remains the same, but the variation possibilities are endless.

Large and small letters alternate in the book.

Naturally, the book ends with a Z—and with a mirrored alphabet.

About the book

The basic structure of the Latin letters hasn't changed for centuries, but their shapes can be endlessly reinvented.
Is an E still an E if it has five crossbars? Or seven? When does it start to look like a comb?Lettering artist Chris Campe explores such questions through playful, experimental alphabets that test the boundaries of legibility, convention, and form.

The book is an invitation to look closely and pick up a pen. For anyone who:

  • is looking for inspiration for their own lettering projects
  • enjoys letterform sketches and formal ideas
  • loves experimental type and drawing

Introduction and index in both German and English.

This is an updated edition of a book originally published in 2020 as volume 114 in the 100for10 series by melville brand design, Munich.

The new edition includes ten additional pages, a German introduction, and an index. For each alphabet, the index shows thumbnails, titles and references, and it answers the #1 question: »What pen did you use?«
