My favorite projects are the ones that allow me to write and design, to work out not just on the form, but also the language. That’s what I did for the tool shed I painted in Paderborn.
Mural design for the municipal youth campsite of the city of Paderborn
2 x 4 meters and 2 x 2 meters
2023
Kulturamt Paderborn
The city of Paderborn invited me to paint a container used as a tool shed at the municipal youth campsite directly on Lake Lippe. Which motif? That was up to me.

First, I brainstormed words that have to do with camping by the lake and arranged them so that they overlap: Seestern, Sternenhimmel, Himmelszelt, Zeltplätzchen. In English: starfish, starry sky, canopy, campground.

You’d have to speak German to fully appreciate this. It celebrates the beauty of the fact that the German language allows you to chain together an almost unlimited number of words to create a new word.
From digital drawing, to paper reference, to chalk sketch on the walls and then on with brush and varnish.

»And how long does this kind of thing take?!«
Four full days.
Seesternenhimmels …—starfish sky ... (sorry, this really doesn’t work in English)

…zeltplätzchen …campground

»Plätzchen« not only means »small place« but also »cookie«, so there’s some beauty in turning a »Zeltplatz« (a campground) into a »Zeltplätzchen«—a small campground or a tent cookie.
German language—a dream!
I designed the container as part of the city of Paderborn’s Secretcity Fassadenfestivals, a urban art festival I was invited to for the second time in summer 2023.
